ONEIDA SPEAKS (Documentary)
In 1935, while the country was deep in the depression, a group of Oneidas in Wisconsin took advantage of a federal writing program designed to employ Americans and offer economic relief. Many, who wrote in their own language, recorded their daily life on the farm to a federal infiltrator sent to drive people off the land to a devastating small pox epidemic. This video was nominated for two Regional Emmys for both Best Documentary of Historic Significance and Videography. Produced by Michelle Danforth- (57 Minutes)
WAY OF THE WARRIOR (Documentary)
A documentary about the warrior ethic in Native American communities. Its purpose is to explore how Native communities have traditionally viewed their warriors and why, duting the 20th century, Native men and women have volunteered for military service at a rate three times highter than non-Indians. This three part short feature, made here in Columbia, SC in 2008,was written and directed by South Carolina Native American filmmaker Miguel Felipe Berg (Chibchan-Paezan from South America), Taylor and Blake Engel, and James Edward Tilden. Tormented by visions of death, a half-blind old man shares insight into the stories of two feuding brothers and a desperate magician in an attempt to save a young waitress from an impending fate unraveling right before his eyes. This film is about what it means to be Indian in the new millennium whilst dealing with the established prejudices, ignorance and portrayal by mainstream media with respect to people of color. From the Neanderthal to the modern European this film charts the arrival of the Europeans into the western hemisphere and illustrates how their cultures and their systems would impact the lives of native people and continue to do so in today’s society. With haunting insights and voices of contemporary native people, this film is about discovering the truth behind the identity and reality as portrayed by mainstream media. This film is an anthem for those whose voices need to be heard and for those global audiences who still do not understand the cultures of the Americas.
